A movie has to stand on its own, whether the viewer has read the book or not (and, usually, the majority haven't). Here's why: A movie reviewer reviews movies, not books. I don't think it's necessary for the reviewer to read the book before reviewing the movie. When reviewing a movie based on a book, should the reviewer make the movie's story part of the commentary, even if the movie's plot matches the book's plot closely? I say yes.
